ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads

This gets framed as a replacement, and it is not one. Google Ads catches somebody who has already decided what to search for. ChatGPT catches somebody earlier, while they are still working out what their options are. Two different moments, worth different money.

Where Google still wins, easily

  • Anything urgent. Nobody is having a conversation with an assistant about their burst pipe. They are searching, and they are calling the first three results.
  • Anything where you need to know exactly what produced the sale. The search terms report and offline conversion import have no equivalent here yet.
  • Anything where the same money is already producing a measurable return. Fix and scale what works before funding what might.

Where the new channel is better

Considered purchases where the buyer's first move is to ask somebody what their options are. Legal, health, finance, education, software, high value trades, travel.

Categories where the Google auction has become unaffordable. If you are paying past twenty dollars a click in Brisbane and the maths only just works, a cheaper auction next door is worth a contained test on its own.

Businesses with something real to say. The assistant paraphrases you to the person asking. A specific, defensible difference gets paraphrased well. A list of adjectives does not.

The honest answer for most businesses

Both, in that order, with very different amounts of money.

Google Ads stays the engine. ChatGPT gets a ring fenced test budget beside it, never instead of it, with its own tracking so it can never borrow credit for a sale search would have made anyway.

If somebody is telling you to move your search budget into AI advertising this year, they are selling you something.

How I would split it

  1. First, the account you already haveIf conversion tracking is counting a page view instead of an enquiry, every decision after it is fiction. That gets fixed before anything new opens.
  2. Then a fixed test, six weeksA number agreed in advance, its own UTMs, its own reporting line. Usually two to four thousand dollars.
  3. Then the unpaid half, in parallelWhether the assistants can find and quote you at all. That is the AI search visibility work and it costs nothing in media.
  4. Then a straight decisionKeep, grow or stop, against the number you wrote down at the start. Nobody moves the goalposts afterwards.
Questions

ChatGPT ads vs Google Ads, straight answers

Should I move budget out of Google Ads?

No. Fund the test from the marketing budget, not by taking it out of a channel that is working. If there is no spare budget, the honest answer is that this is not the year for you to test it, and that is a fine answer.

Which gets me leads faster?

Google, comfortably. It is a mature auction with mature tooling and people arrive at it ready to act. The case for ChatGPT ads is price and position, not speed.

Can I run the same ads on both?

You can reuse the offer. Do not reuse the copy. Search ad copy repeats the query back at the reader, and doing that after an assistant has already answered them reads as noise.

Is Google doing the same thing inside AI Overviews?

They already put ads into AI surfaces, and that competition is the reason the ChatGPT auction will not stay cheap. Again, an argument for learning the format now, not for betting the budget on it.

Can you run both for me?

Yes, and that is the normal arrangement. A fixed monthly fee agreed before anything starts, covering whatever mix the accounts need, never a percentage of your spend. No lock-in, and both accounts stay in your name.
